A Fortified City

I am a fortified city.
I am a fortified city. The Lord has set walls of protection all around me so that the enemy can't just come in and take over. No matter how many soldiers the enemy sends against me, my walls are strong and I, as a city, do not fall to them.

An army from the enemy came against me today.

At first thought, I felt that it was unfair for the Lord to pit me against an entire army - how could He expect me to win? They constantly barraged my city and waged war against me. The walls were my protection. But still, it was me against an army.

Then, I realized that the Lord doesn't work like that - He doesn't put me in situations I can't handle. In fact, the battle I was partaking in was whether or not to open the door. I didn't have to fight the army, all I had to do was choose to keep the door closed. This was a fair battle - me vs. the door.

The unfortunate fact is that I opened the door and I gave the enemy a foothold.  I allowed the enemy to come in and overwhelm the city. I had no idea what was going on. The thoughts and feelings that I was experiencing had no truth in them, but I was still feeling them. The consequence of opening the door was severe - I was hopeless. I would proceed to be ravaged by the enemy until I was too tired to be conscious. I just knocked out in my bed and hoped that God would save me by the time I woke up.

When I woke up, I remembered a dream with friends that showed me that God was saving me. He was redeeming friendships that I felt were very important - and this was His way of showing me that He had dealt with the enemy. The enemy no longer had footholds in that friendship, and the enemy no longer had footholds in my city.

Right when this thought ended, I felt relief and I thought, "It's finally over." Immediately, my phone rang. Seeing Maggie's name ringing on my phone was confirmation that it was God who had saved me. I felt as if God was telling me that He came because my friends asked Him to. I'm sure He would have come to save me anyways, but He wanted me to know that He came this time because my friends asked Him to.
