revelations: events outline

these are my notes from reading revelation ch4-end (which discusses the end times). they are all quotes or careful paraphrases.

1. in the right hand of him who sits on the throne is a scroll with seven seals
2. the lamb who looks as if it has been slain stands at the center of the throne and takes the scroll and opens the seals
3. 6 of 7 seals are opened by the lamb
• first: rider with crown on white horse
• second: rider with large word on fiery red horse
• third: rider with pair of scales on black horse
• fourth: rider named death with hades following close behind on pale horse
• fifth: the souls of those who had been slain b/c of the word of God are under the altar saying 'how long till you judge earth and avenge us'
• each was given a white robe and was told to wait a little longer until the number who were killed b/c of the word was complete
• sixth: great earthquake - sun turned black - moon turned blood red   stars in the sky fell to the earth - the sky receded as a scroll - every mountain and island was removed
• everyone hid in caves fearing the wrath of the lamb
4. 4 angels stand at the corners of the earth holding back wind
• an angel from the east carries the seal of God and says 144,000 are sealed
5. there was a great multitude wearing white robes and holding palm branches
• 'these are they who have come out of the great tribulation'
6. the seventh seal is opened: silence for half an hour
• 7 angels are given 7 trumpets
• angel offers a golden censer with the incense of the prayer of the saints
• angel filled the censer with fire and hurled it at the earth causing thunder and lightning and an earthquake
7. 6 of 7 trumpets are sounded
• 1: hail and fire mixed with blood (third of earth , third of trees, and all the grass burned up)
• 2: huge mountain ablaze thrown into sea (third of sea turned to blood, third of sea creatures died, third of ships destroyed)
• 3: great star named wormwood fell on a third of rivers/springs and they became bitter
• 4:  a third o the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars - a third of the day and night was without light
• *5: first woe: star fell given the key to the shaft of the abyss
• he opened the abyss, sun and sky were darkened by smoke, locusts with power of scorpions came out of smoke. they were told only to harm those without the seal on their forehead.
• the king of the locusts was the angel of the abyss called Abaddon/Apollyon
• *6: second woe: 4 angels bound at euphrates kill a third of mankind (with 2 hundred million troops)
• the horses heads resembled those of lions and plagues of fire smoke and sulfur came from their mouths.
• the rest of mankind still did not repent after this.
8. angel robed in cloud with rainbow above his head whose face was like the sun and legs like fiery pillars held a little scroll.
• right foot in sea, left foot on land, shouted like a lion announcing: "when 7th trumpet sounds, the mystery of god will be accomplished"
• john is asked to eat the scroll and it tasted as honey in his mouth but turned his stomach sour
• john is told to prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings
9. john is told to measure the temple (minus the outer court that will be trampled by gentiles for 42 months). he is told that:
• two witnesses in sackcloth will prophesy for 1260 days
• if anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours the opposers
• they can make it not rain while they prophesy and they can turn water to blood and strike the earth with every kind of plague
• the beast from the abyss attacks them and kill them
• for 3.5 days, everyone will refuse them burial
• after 3.5 days, they are revived and brought up to heaven in a cloud
• at this time, an earthquake collapses 1/10 of the city and kills 7000.
• the survivors give glory to god in heaven
10. *7: third woe: god's temple in heaven is opened and the ark of the covenant is seen and lighting, thunder, and earthquake and great hailstorm come.
11. pregnant woman
12. red dragon with 7 heads and 10 horns and 7 crowns (satan)
• tail sweeps 1/3 of stars out of sky to earth
• the dragon waits for the woman to give birth so he can eat it as soon as it's born
13. the child is swept into heaven and the woman flees to the desert for 1260 days
14. war in heaven: michael and angels fight dragon (satan) and his angels
• dragon and his angels are hurled to earth
15. dragon pursues woman
• woman is given 2 eagle wings and flies to place prepared for her in desert where she is taken care of for a time, times, and half a time.
• dragon spewed water like a river, but the earth swallowed it and the dragon made war with all her offspring (all who hold to the testimony of jesus)
16. beast of the sea with ten horns and seven heads with blasphemous names and ten crowns
• the dragon gave the beast his power and authority and his throne
• one of the heads had a fatal wound that had been healed
• the whole world worshiped the dragon b/c he gave authority to the beast
• the beast was given power to make war against the saints and conquer them
• he was given authority over all whose name were not in the book of life and they worshiped the beast
17. beast of the earth: two horns like a lamb but spoke like a dragon
• given power and authority by beast of sea
• made all the earth worship the beast of the sea with images of the beast that could speak and kill all who refuse to worship it
• performed great and miraculous signs (fire from sky)
• forced all to get a mark on right hand or forehead of the beast's name/number: 666 (which is man's number)
18. the lamb with the 144,000 sang a new song that only the 144000 could learn
19. 3 angels:
• 1: had the eternal gospel
• 2: fallen is babylon
• 3: "if you receive the mark, you will drink the wine of God's fury"
20. one like the son of man seated on a cloud with a crown of gold and a sharp sickle
• another angel came and told him to take and reap and the cloud angel harvested the earth
21. another angel w/ sickle and one in charge of fire came and harvested the grapes and threw them into the winepress of God's wrath
22. tabernacle of the testimony is opened
23. 7 angels with 6 of 7 last plagues (that complete god's wrath) come out of the temple
• one of the living creatures gives them 7 golden bowls filled with god's wrath
• no one could enter the glory filled temple until the wrath was completed
• 1: ugly and painful sores
• 2: sea turned to blood and everything in the sea died
• 3: rivers and spring turned to blood
• 4: sun was given power to scorch people with fire (refused to repent)
• 5: the beasts kingdom was plunged into darkness (refused to repent)
• 6: euphrates: water was dried up to prepare way for kings from east
• 3 evil spirits that looked like frogs came out of dragon, beast, and false prophet's mouth
• they are spirits of demons performing miracles to gather the kings for battle on the great day
24. Jesus: "behold i come like a thief"
25. the kings gather at Armageddon (place)
26. 7th last plague: "it is done" - lightning, thunder, severe earthquake
• great city splits in 3 & cities of nations collapse
• God gives babylon wrath
• every island fled away and mountains couldn't be found
• huge hailstones (100lbs) fell on men
27. punishment of the great prostitute who sits on many waters: woman sitting on scarlet beast is covered in blasphemous names with seven heads and ten horns :Mystery, Babylon the Great, Mother of Prostitutes:
• she was drunk with blood of the saints
• the beast once was and now is not, and will come up out of the abyss and go to his destruction
• 7 heads are 7 hills&kings on which she sits. five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come.
• the scarlet beast is an eighth king. he belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.
• ten horns are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but will receive authority with the beast for one hour
• their one purpose is to give authority to the beast
• they will make war against the lamb and lose
• the many waters are the nations of the earth
• the beast and 10 horns will hate the prostitute and bring eat her flesh and burn her in fire
• the woman/great prostitute: the great city that rules over the kings of the earth
28. angel with great authority cries: fallen is babylon the great" and the kings of the earth will see her burning and be terrified and weep
29. angel throws large millstone sized boulder into sea and says "with such violence, the great city of babylon will be thrown down"
30. rider named faithful and true on white horse ( eyes of fire, many crowns on head, name written that only he knows, robe dipped in blood, name: Word of God, sword from mouth, will rule with iron scepter)
• armies of heaven follow him
• he treads the winepress
• on his robe and thigh are written "king of kings and lord of lords"
31. angel standing in the sun gathers the birds for the great supper of god: to eat the flesh of people
32. the beast and false prophet are captured and thrown into lake of fire
• the rest were killed by the sword from the rider's mouth
33. angel with key to abyss is holding a chain and bound dragon/satan in the Abyss for 1000 years.
34. those who had been beheaded for Christ reigned with him for 1000 years: known as 'first resurrection'
• the rest remained dead
35. after 1000 years, satan is released and goes out to deceive 4 corners of the earth
• they surround God's camp, but fire consumed them. the dragon/satan/devil was thrown into the lake of fire.
36. Him seated on the great white throne for judgment
• earth and sky fled from his presence
• the sea, death and hades gave up their dead and then death and hades were thrown into the lake of fire
• anyone not found in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire
37. new heaven and new earth (for the first heaven and first earth had passed away)
38. the holy city//new Jerusalem with 12 gates came from heaven dressed as a bride
• from the throne: "dwelling of God is with men" & "I am making everything new" & "it is done"
• the city is 12000 stadia long, walls 144 cubits thick, 12 gates each made of a single pearl
• there is no temple because the lamb and God are its temple
• there is no need for light b/c the glory of God gives light and the lamb is its lamp
• there will be no night and no need to close the gates
39. river of the water of life flows from the throne of God down the middle of the great street of the city
• on each side was the tree of life bearing 12 crops of fruit
• the leaves are for the healing of the nations
